⚠️ READ WITH DISCRETION!! He Str*ngled His Daughter While on FaceTime With Her Mother! 💔
On the morning of March 20, 2023, Deontray Flanagan picked up his 2-year-old daughter Zevaya from daycare without permission from her mother, Kairsten Watson.
After taking Zevaya, Flanagan drove to a nearby Walmart where the child’s mother worked. According to investigators, he physically assaulted Watson there, striking her numerous times in the face. He then took her cellphone and demanded she give him the password and access to it. He did this while still holding their daughter. Afterwards, he took off with her phone, and police were called.
Deputies located Flanagan’s car — a red Chevrolet Camaro — and a police chase began, lasting roughly 45 minutes and spanning multiple roads. During the pursuit, Flanagan drove the wrong way on some streets and struck other vehicles. Zevaya was unrestrained and got tossed around inside the car.
And this is the most horrifying aspect of the case- While fleeing from police, Flanagan called Zevaya’s mother and her grandfather on FaceTime — Watson's mother, the child's grandmother, also worked at Walmart, and her cellphone was used for the FaceTime call— In front of them, while on the video call, he beat and str*ngled Zevaya. 💔
Watson pleaded with him to stop and reminded him that was their child and that she loved him, but he continued. At one point, he wrapped his arm around her neck and squeezed, causing the little girl to gasp for air.
The chase ended after he reportedly crashed into some other cars and stopped in a field at St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, sparking a standoff. SWAT officers quickly surrounded the vehicle, and after about 20 minutes, they moved in. The toddler was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to court records and medical examinations, Zevaya was struck with or against a blunt object. She was also choked, leading to her death.
Flanagan was arrested and charged with capital murder — the most serious offense in Texas, often reserved for especially heinous or violent murders. In January 2025, a jury convicted him of capital murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
During the trial, additional disturbing details were revealed, including that Flanagan attacked a news camera crew outside the courtroom before the verdict. Family testimonies, especially Zevaya’s mother, emphasized how helpless they felt watching her die over video.
The 2-year-old’s mother said that she previously tried to warn authorities that Flanagan was threatening her and her daughter, and that he was dangerous.
"I told [the authorities] over and over and over that something was going to be wrong," Watson told ABC 13. "They could have at least tried to find him, but even with his past, no. I said, 'Are y'all going to wait until something happens to her?'"
Watson said she showed authorities several messages where Flanagan threatened to harm their daughter, ABC 13 reported. "They didn't believe me," Watson said. "They thought I was just making this up, and he was the father." 😢
