Chloe was among the counselors at Camp Mystic who died during the catastrophic floods in Hunt

She didn’t run from hard things, she ran toward them.
That’s how those who knew Chloe Childress are remembering her.
At just 18, she had already earned a reputation for quiet leadership, steady compassion, and showing up when it mattered most.
Chloe was among the counselors at Camp Mystic who died during the catastrophic floods in Hunt, Texas, over the holiday weekend.
The rising Guadalupe River overtook parts of the camp, killing at least 11 young women and girls.
Chloe was one of them.
She had just graduated from The Kinkaid School in Houston and was preparing to attend the University of Texas at Austin this fall.
In a letter to the school community, Kinkaid’s headmaster, Jonathan Eades, wrote:
“Her honesty gave others the courage to speak up. Her resilience helped others push through. Her joy, so present in the little things, reminded all who knew her to keep showing up with heart.”
Chloe was co-president of the Honor Council, a varsity cross-country runner, and the founder of a service club dedicated to helping senior citizens.
She didn’t just understand what it meant to be part of a community, she helped create one.
“She lost her life upholding this selfless and fierce commitment to others,” Eades wrote.
Chloe’s story is one of many unfolding in the wake of this disaster. Officials now say at least 78 people have died across Texas, including 28 children… most in Kerr County.
The search continues for others still missing.
Tonight, families across the country are holding onto memories.
Chloe’s family is holding onto the example she set every day she was here.
